Filtration Services
About Us:
Thank you for your interest in Thomas Petroleum’s on-site filtration service. We are one of the largest Chevron oil marketers in the United States and a leader in the oil filtration industry. We know that over 50% of component failures are due to particulate/moisture contamination of the lubricant. Our filtration process removes harmful particles in your lube system thereby improving product stability and performance characteristics. Our goal is to reduce wear, decrease unscheduled downtime and extend the life of your equipment.
Equipment:
Thomas Petroleum has two state of the art filtration trailers that will clean oil well below GE or Mitsubishi fluid cleanliness specifications of ISO 14/11 and NAS 5. We also have an on-site laser particle counter, and access to a high speed flushing unit, & vacuum-dehydration unit. The filter vessels have pressure gauges on both the inlet and outlet for easy determination of pressure differential, allowing for zero risk of filter collapse (failure) and maximum safety to the surrounding people and equipment. The vessels are also equipped with special fluid sampling valves for “before & after” oil samples and particle counts.
Process:
Thomas Petroleum will arrive on site with a steam cleaned transport tanker with ample volume to contain all the oil in one turbine reservoir. We will provide trained and experienced personnel to hook-up and secure the filter vessel and hose connections from the tanker to your turbine reservoir(s). You will be responsible for providing personnel to properly vent the reservoir just prior to starting filtration and inspect and/or clean the internal walls and floor of the reservoir once empty. The turbine oil is passed through the filters for a second time when refilling the reservoir from the tanker, giving the ultimate filtration service and cleanest oil possible.
Thomas Petroleum personnel follow stringent safety, product integrity and product containment guidelines which gives you the safest, most efficient and thorough service possible.

Rotary Pressure Vessel Oxidation Test (RPVOT) - ASTM D2272
(Formerly known as RBOT)
The RPVOT of a used turbine oil relative to the RPVOT of that same oil when unused, is an indication of the remaining oxidation life of that oil. The “New Oil” RPVOT level is not the important characteristic when selecting an oil. The important consideration is the rate at which RPVOT decreases in service. RPVOT levels decrease based on length of oil service, temperatures and contamination. This should be a gradual decrease for mineral-based turbine oils. When using synthetic products, caution is advised because these products will go for very long periods with little drop in RPVOT levels but then could drop suddenly.
The projected life of Chevron GST 32 may be well beyond 22,000 hours even in the 3-bearing design GE MS 7000 gas turbine. It would be advantageous to conduct RPVOT testing on at least an annual basis until RPVOT results drop to < 50% of new oil results. At that point, an increased frequency of testing may be merited. One key point to remember is that a high initial RPVOT level on a new oil does not necessarily mean you will get more life out of that oil. The important criteria is that the rate at which that RPVOT decreases over time to the 25% level (GE’s/Chevron’s condemning level) determines oil service life.
Particle Counts
The number of particles present greater than a particular micron size per unit volume of fluid. The significance of a particle count is to determine the relative fluid/system cleanliness and the effectiveness of filtration of oil conditioning equipment.
The ISO Cleanliness Code, ISO 4406 (1999) is used to quantify the number of particles in a given volume of oil (per 1ml or per 100ml), at specified size ranges (greater than 4 microns, greater than 6 microns, and greater than 14 microns). The old code was represented by "R2/ R5/R15" the new code is represented by "R4/R6/ R14".
Other Services & Products
In addition to filtration and testing services, Thomas Petroleum also offers other contamination control solutions for your equipment and work environment. These solutions are outlined below:
High Speed Flushing—this process is designed for new turbine or equipment installations. Our flushing process incorporates high pressure pumps that speed flushing fluids throughout your equipment to remove scale, large particles and other contaminants before the final filtration process is preformed. This service is available through all of our locations and is highly recommended for new or refurbished turbine installations.
Desiccant Breathers and Oil Safe® Containers—These are critical contamination control products that should be integrated into all preventative maintenance programs, especially after filtration services are provided. These products help reduce the amount of contamination that will re-enter your system; thereby, increasing the life of your oil and equipment. Thomas Petroleum provides an array of these products for your use in any environment.
